| Thavius Beck’s new record starts with bang. A searing bank of samples and a huge cluster of drum lines engulf Sonic Sound’s one-and-a-half minutes. But the commotion never stops. Thru – Beck’s second long-player – is neither subtle nor pretty. Rather, it’s intense, immediate and somewhat difficult. But this is the LA producer’s way: blending finicky experimental hip hop sensibilities with meticulous beats and an unusual, synth-heavy industrial flare. Beck bends and stretches the genre in directions as diverse as drum’n’bass and techno. Featuring a glut of highly skilled MCs – Saul Williams and Nocando to name a couple – Thru proves a strong, distinctive offering. - Music Australia Guide |
