| This second album from Melbourne’s Qua is a departure from the comparatively simple abstractions of 2001’s Forgetabout, incorporating a greatly enhanced arsenal of acoustic instruments as well as featuring more detailed, technical production. "Painting Monsters" kicks off proceedings with a heavily textured piece of melodic electroacoustics, which shifts into the drum-heavy "On Clouds," layered with all manner of electronic and instrumental sounds, from dulcimers to laptop creaks and crackles. The album continues to be jam-packed with ear-ticklingly beautiful sound designs right up to the symphonic "Secret Space," which closes the album with possibly its strongest moment, recalling Boom Bip at his best and Four Tet at his most upbeat. Excellent. - Boomkat |
