| Marc Bianchi is Her Space Holiday and he obviously has a penchant for sweet indie pop. With XOXO, Panda and the New Kid Revival he's made a party record of sorts - the kind of party that you can well imagine Tilly And The Wall and Those Dancing Days gatecrashing along with Bianchi (I don’t know whether that’s a good thing or if it would actually be an incredibly annoying gathering. Annoying, probably). ‘Two Tins Cans And A Length Of String’ has a nicely ominous start before taking off into glee mode; it's anthemic, acoustically strummed chorus eventually becomes a little too inane. This is the general pattern of the album; there are plenty of ideas here, but Bianchi's desire to strike for big campfire melodies comes across as insincere and cloying. Not that music shouldn’t be happy, of course. The problem with this record is that it's a little too inane at moments, and maybe if the arrangements were more fleshed out it would hit deeper. Alas, the bedroom aesthetic coupled with the 'reach for the stars' approach make uneasy bedfellows in this instance. For those who love music that sounds like it was made by toys and pans, this was made for you. For those who don’t quite dig that style, you’ll struggle to deal with Bianchi's funny kind of happiness. - Art Rocker |
