There's a (synth-punk) riot going on... There's nowt like a band teetering on the edge of collapse to get the juices flowing, and few flirt with chaos like Edinburgh art-college boys The Magnificents. The bug-eyed marshals of retro-futurist racket (treble! bass! knackered vocoders!) don't so much have influences as seem to have tapped directly into the lifeforce of the greats: The Stooges for raw, primal energy, Joy Division for twitchy, itchy momentum and The Jesus & Mary Chain for howling intemperence. It takes a couple of breathers, but essentially this is a record summed up in two titles, "Digital Dirt" and the staccato, magnifico call-to-arms "Kids Now!". A blast, but NME worries for their blood pressure. - NME |
