MH-028 Busdriver - Avantcore "Avantcore," the lead single from Busdriver's new full-length release, Fear Of A Black Tangent is a comment on the state of hip-hop including the pompousness, pretension, simple-minded bickering, and internal politics that encompass the business at every level from indie to mainstream. The single also includes two bonus tracks from the full-length: "Happiness('s Unit Of Measurement)" and "Unemployed Black Astronaut." Three top shelf remixes are included on the B-Side as D-Styles of Invisbl Skratch Piklz fame, Warp's Prefuse 73, and Los Angeles producer Nobody take on one track each.

With a title like "Avantcore" suggesting perhaps the most difficult-listening hip-hop imaginable, this single is something of a pleasant surprise. "Happiness('s Unit of Measurement)" even employs a Kanye-style chipmunk soul vocal. The overall idea here is massively dense lyrical wordplay, combined with thankfully accessible melodic beats.
