| Judging from the latest release by Her Space Holiday, aka Mark Bianchi, it seems our protagonist has had nothing short of a terrible year. Fortunately for music fans, or at least emo electronica fans, the maxim "whatever doesn't kill you makes a great record" applies. Bianchi's recent The Young Machines picks up at the crossroads of Elliot Smith and the Postal Service, forging a path all its own that invokes both pop indulgence and visceral reflection. The opening bells of the title track invite the listener on a journey of cinematic proportion, through the alleyways of drug addiction and personal loss, punctuated by self-doubt, sarcasm and lust. The final track "From South Carolina" boasts a gentle, intricate arrangement lulling the record's conclusion into a peaceful exhaustion. This is Bianchi's tour de force, emotive but clever enough to avoid seeming self-centered or pathetic, and satisfying in its candid complexity. - Junk Media |
