| As a solo artist and one half of Nephlim Modulation Systems with Orko of the Psychotic Alien, Bigg Jus has continued to expand on his groundbreaking, experimental sounds of Company Flow. While the recently released NMS album was inaccessibly experimental, Poor takes it to the outer limits but doesn't forget about the beats. Bigg Jus still hasn't stopped ridiculing American imperialism or rapping about conspiracy theories on a galactic scale - even when it's a battle rap, Jus is a cerebral lyricist with a large vocabulary and a style that recalls the cut-up writings of William S. Burroughs. Plus, his vocal style is unorthodox. What makes Poor better than the last NMS album is that Jus fits better with these beats. Gman's lo-fi, space-age production embraces experimentation but puts emphasis on the drums. Poor is the better way to spread Bigg Jus' lesson since it is a less abrasive listen. And hip-hop needs more rappers willing to step up and speak their mind. - Exclaim! |
