| In which hip-hop gets another chance to shine and surprise by coming at itself from two different directions at once. Having expanded the range of its shadings and tones, James Rutledge spreads the effect by getting various friends and associates to rework tracks from last year's album release. Forming the base apex and backbone to the whole section is Kieran Hebden's extended Four Tet remix, a delicate sprawl of freeform woodwinds, pinpoint percussion and random acoustic strumming that extends itself over 20 minutes of the entire running time. More economical in their effects are Scott Herren's slamming Prefuse 73 mix and Cherrystones' elegiac Old Skool ruminations. With Danger Mouse, Home Skillet and Pedro tweaking hooks and filling out some of the other lines, there's plenty here to get positive about. - The Wire |
