| Santa Monica-based producer Alfred Weisberg-Roberts may have a name like a Victorian scientist, but his music vibrates with 21st-century invention. A product of the sample age, tracks such as At My Heels sound like a charity shop's worth of 78s fed through a malfunctioning computer as sweeping strings vie with a clattering mesh of Latin rhythm. The breakbeat-based tracks offer obvious comparisons with like-minds such as Prefuse 73, but Samba Legrand's vamping synths and awesome bass surge is all his own. - Q |
