It is interesting how broken beat, IDM and micro-sampling have created a rip in genre-space continuum leaving a wormhole through to the vast unchartable wastes of experimental. From Aphex to Akufen we have been challenged with some pretty kooky crap to love, find catchy and maybe sing along to (join me in a chorus of "Windowlicker" anyone?). The prolific Daedelus is a consummate example of why you have to give the challenge your time. He sweetens the pill with fantastic guest emcees (MF Doom, Sci, Cyne) and lush, clever samples from the real old-school - 1930's strings, chopped operatics and sweet 70's acoustic guitar. It's all so perfectly listenable, which for music which sits so comfortably with its avant-garde status is an great achievement. Warmer than plaid, more fun than RJD2 and a good sight more groove than a lot of these cats. Emotional, smart, funky, original, marvellous. - Bulb |
