| This ambitious collaboration between two of LA's finest is actually one long composition. Imposing free jazz aesthetics on hip-hop music - or perhaps it's the other way around - the duo, along with dynamic turntablist D-Styles, mix feathery drums with stand up bass, meandering keys and frenetic scratching. It's the perfect musical backdrop for Awol One's laid back, stream of consciousness musings. Not so clearly rap or spoken-word, Awol's flows are certainly distinctive - "You call her J-Lo / I call her Fur-Pez" - and definitely free-form, very much in the spirit of this project. - Mean Street |
