| To my limited knowledge, Curse ov Dialect is the first Australian band to be signed to hell cool US underground hip-hop label Mush, thus joining a thoroughbred stable that also includes Aesop Rock, Doseone, Daedelus, and others moving hip-hop into the 21st century. And it's not at all hard to hear why. The album opens with the snip snap cut-and-paste (in the primary school context of the word) "Baby Howd We Ever Get This Way." It's a brilliant statement of intent to capsize the genre, which is obviously why Mush sent out a rescue boat. From here Lost in the Real Sky turns on a frenetic topsy-turvy ride through political, multi-cultural, experimental and remarkably exciting hip-hop. From sampling some kind of ABC Educational video on the other side of history for "The Truth About Tasmania" to exulting in the varieties of the Aussie accent and lingo, from music so seethingly dark it raises goose pimples to music so comical you can't help but laugh and hit replay, this is the bona fide real deal. It would take one-thousand listens and you still wouldn't even crack the surface of intrigue and fascination. Easily one of the best Australian albums of the year. - Beat |
