| Riz Maslen makes her Mush debut with White Rabbits, a silky blend of environmental audio, gentle electronics, and tranquil acoustic instrumentation. Piano and guitar weave a placid melody through "New Cross" until they dissolve into a rushing field recording from a London Tube station; a tiny voice drifts over drum loops in "Magpies" summoning piano, strings, bagpipe, and sweeping synthesizers to create a comforting nest of sound. Static, a wandering harmonica, and a slow-picked guitar take us to the wilderness in "Feelin' Remote" an Old West-style song that highlights the pervasive thread of Maslen's record: musings on the tangled nature of love and the distance that comes between people. White Rabbits gives us sonic companionship for the solitary moments of soul-searching. - Earplug |
