MH-234 Bibio - Fi  Recommended to Mush by Marcus Eoin of Boards Of Canada, the debut release from central England's Stephen Wilkinson (aka Bibio) is a triumph of saturation, distortion, and musical obscurity. Comprised of seventeen ambient songs built on samples of his own work rather than the work of others, fi is rich in musical imagery. Using manipulated live instrumentation, field recordings, and a strong portion of effects, Bibio's musical influences - the Incredible String Band, Joao Gilberto, My Bloody Valentine, Tortoise, and the producers of Warp Records - seep into his compositions. | I'll admit it right now. If one half of Boards of Canada suggests an album, I'll give it a go. It's not that I'm impressionable (okay, maybe a little) but where's the harm in a five minute scan. Generally speaking of course, five minutes, or approximately thirty seconds or so of each track, is enough to get a feel for a record, especially one like Bibio's fi, soon to be released among a string of electronic records put out by Mush. While I can't in good conscious call the seventeen tracks on this debut by Stephen Wilkinson "songs," I do enjoy them tremendously as ambient guitar pieces, eerily reminiscent (and more accomplished) of the stuff I tend to write in my downtime. Expect lots of reviews using words like organic, pastoral, bucolic and idyllic. - Scissorkick |
