| Baltimore, MD's Labtekwon has been making quiet waves in hip-hop circles for years. Though you may have never heard any of Lab's seven full-length releases (out on his own Ankh Ba Records), Mush Records obviously aims to blow the lid off Lab's down-low existence. Song of the Sovereign is a greatest hits of sorts, though it's more of an introduction - for those who have been sleeping - to Labtekwon's style, a truly inventive and unique delivery that can slow down to an apocalyptically slow trot and explode into a full gait that bobs and weaves through the music and always makes its way back to the beat's head. The music itself represents several albums' worth of beats, and is varied - from jazzy and funky to abstract and raw - which further highlights Labtekwon's skill on the mic. - Synthesis |
