| As half of legendary duo Sebutones, production guru Sixtoo (alongside Buck 65) was a driving force in the movement to drag hip-hop and its attendant narcissism kicking and screaming into left-field. The Sebutones are temporarily on hiatus while Buck does the solo thang, so Six has joined forces with longtime associate Stigg of the Dump to become Villain Accelerate. The duo's debut voyage could well be a companion piece to Dj Shadow's seminal Endtroducting - a crush of muted-to-midnight fervor lapping over meaty Rhodes fills and skunky basslines. Tracks like "Paper, Boxcutter, Rock" and "Herd Whispers" downplay visceral beatitude in favor of slinky passages that utilize moody dissonance and hop-along beats. Occasionally, the kids kick it into overdrive, as "Cracktivity" superbad drumming and ominous programming most righteously attests. - Splendid |
