| It's pretty well documented that, with a few notable exceptions, I'm not the biggest supporter of instrumental bands. Call me shallow, but I almost always prefer lyrics and music together. After a few spins of Lymbyc Systym's fantastic new Shutter Release, however, I've added this talented duo to that list of exceptions. This enjoyable 10-track record finds brothers Jared and Michael Bell seamlessly blending pop melodies with elaborate orchestration and just enough experientation to keep things interesting without getting too, well, weird. Opener "Trichromatic" is worth the price of the album by itself and the brothers Bell additional score with the moddy "Interiors," "Kubrick" and rousing "Bedroom Anthem." If you're looking for an instrumental album to embrace, this is a good place to start. - In Tune |
