| Unlike the Greek fables that Aesop Rock's name suggests, there's nothing as straightforwardly moralistic on his debut album, Float. In fact, his recondite rhyme aesthetic makes most current hip-hop sound downright infantile. The production is miles ahead, too - a collusion of inky, noir-ish textures and amoebic jazz with help from Blockhead. The traditional street narrative is out the window; instead, Aesop speaks in abstract tongue twisters and theatrical one-man conversations. - Resonance |
