| Jel's 10 Seconds grabbed my attention immediately. An ode to the SP-1200, hip-hop's first and most famous sampling device. 10 Seconds - named for the 1200's limited ability to store no more than ten seconds of total sample time - is a compact history of hip-hop sampling, from Marley Marl to Rza. Jel may be using other people's records but the eclectic, expansive sound here is all his. One of hip-hop's most innovative beat merchants, he invests 10 Seconds with both energy and depth. This is more than just a tribute album. It's an eye-opening introduction to instrumental hip-hop and some of its many possibilities. - Mean Street |
