| This is what a concept album should be. Its dedicated to the E-mu's SP-1200, the original hip-hop sampler. The album's name comes from the amount of time you can sample with the SP. Because of this limit producers were pushed to be more creative. They learned how to use every function of the SP, and innovated from there. All the songs here are named after functions and commands of the precious component. This release marks the first time I give an album from the Anticon collective must-buy status. The beats are hard, vocals are minimal and the love Jel has for this machine shines through. The Bob Marley sample is exceptionally freaked. Trip-hop and acid jazz strive to be what this Jel album is - instrumental hip-hop. All these sissy Village types and dance scene Brits figured they could do hip-hop without the attitude... but there is no hip-hop without the attitude. This album revels in its hip-hopness and you should too. - Thick |
