| Chicago-born Jel manipulates samples with the precision of a concert violinist and the reckless spontaneity of a teenager car thief. He's used his SP-1200 to create beats for some of hip-hop's finest emcees to flow over, but on his own album, rather than muddle his unearthly compositions with lots of pesky lyrics, he's opted to keep it simple and uses the thirteen tracks on 10 Seconds to demonstrate the full range of sampled-based music. It's sometimes rich and other times subtle, but soulful and always surprising. - San Francisco Examiner |
