| The name of this instrumental hip-hop release comes from the piece of musical gear that spawned the music contained herein: the SP-1200. An ancient (by today's standards) sampler with a sample length of a mere ten seconds, the SP-1200 is perhaps the most important tool in hip-hop history. Players like Marly Marl, the Beastie Boys and Wu Tang's Rza have proudly admitted to using the SP-1200, and many still do so. For Jel, the antiquated device was the cornerstone of the creation process for all the music on 10 Seconds, allowing him near limitless combinations of samples that flow into one seamless full-length album without sacrificing the in-the-pocket musical backbone of hip-hop. This is Jel at his finest, exploring the boundaries of original music by pushing the possibilities of what can be done with sampled music. - Synthesis |
