MH-208 Jel - 10 Seconds  From Mantronix to Marley Marl, the Beastie Boys to Large Professor, the Bomb Squad to Dj Muggs, and the Rza to Jel, the SP-1200 has been the most important instrument in hip-hop's short history. Named after the unit's criminally small amount of sample time, 10 Seconds pays homage to hip-hop's past without ever sounding dated. | 10 Seconds is Anticon in-house producer (Themselves, Deep Puddle Dynamics) and first Hip-Hop Hunks coverboy Jel's tribute to the hissy and memory-deficient SP-1200. With twenty-three tracks named after the drum machine/sampler's various functions ("11. Multi Pitch," "22. MIDI Parameters"), this instrumental LP is very much in the Mush tradition - hypnotic, loopy, understated and rhythmically sturdy. Deceiving like the impact of a velvet hammer, Jel's beats seem at first simplistic but reveal themselves to be subtly well crafted. - Urb |
