| Busdriver is an undeniably gifted rapper who can reel off wry, observational rhymes full of cross-cultural reverences and scathing social critiques with ease. For you, this should be old news. Coming up via Project Blowed, he's among the indie hip-hop elite that keep real heads satiated in the rapidly gentrifying world of rap. Never one to shy away from the ironic realities of being an "underground star" (where all the street cred in the country can't match the lunch budget of a Jay-Z video shoot), Busdriver laments his decidedly existential situation at length over the course of these panoramically produced tunes: "What kind of name is Bus Drive? / It suggests a wack allegory / And it can't be justified by any background story / I heard he sucks live / Only appeals to hipsters who dress like Russian spies." But it's these internal struggles that fuel his potent lyricism - and his outstanding album. - Urb |
