| Busdriver is putting too much pressure on himself. Comparing his new record with his previous work, the fun is less obvious. There is no song suitable for a Tony Hawk Underground video game soundtrack. Ultimately, this is for the best. Busdriver, known most prominently for being the only rapper ditched on both Blind Date and Change of Heart, is trying to be hip-hop's one-man check and balance and his ambition isn't completely unfounded. A Project Blowed hired gun and affiliate of lame rappers Of Mexican Descent, Busdriver is big on cred but bigger on indignation. With lines about fickle fans ("Wanna hear some exclusive tracks? NO! / Damn, tough crowd!") and an album title that references Public Enemy, his mission statement isn't quite smudged napkin material. He lambastes overanxious pop rappers, racial tension, and society's preconceptions in a nasal hopscotch speed rap over frantic instrumentals. It's all a charming, bizarre, and very distinctive experiment in sound. - See Magazine |
