| An album of absurdist hip-hop from the LA underground from Project Blowed MC, Busdriver. From the opening proclamation of "Yawning Zeitgeist Intro (freestyle)," it's clear why this West Coast freestyler tours with the likes of Beans and Mike Ladd and records for leftside label Mush. To get a taste of the alternative route Busdriver takes, head for the manic lyricism of "Unemployed Black Astronaut" ("William Burroughs on crystal methamphetamines," was how one scribe described his flow). The aptly entitled "Avantcore" works a cartoon piano hook around biting observations of life as an underground MC ("I did a song with so and so and got signed but the checks will never clear"). Heading from the lysergic madness of "Wormholes" to the classical strings-led drama of "Map Your Psyche," Busdriver stretches hip-hop boundaries. Daedelus assists on production and Freestyle Fellowships Mikah-9 guests on this intoxicating, if somewhat off the wall, addition to LA's new wave. - Straight No Chaser |
