| Hip-hop seems to be taking over the left-field as much as the mainstream, Where '90s electronic experimentalists elaborated on techno and drum and bass, today's heads are all about taking the stoned syncopated and sample collage techniques of hip-hop to the nth degree. Fourtet is the UK's prime example, and the USA is full of beatnik beat-heads trying different takes on avant-hop such as Daedelus, Prefuse 73, and Boom Bip. Daedelus is probably the coolest of this trio. His combination of swooning, jazzy Hitchcockian soundtrack suspense and disorientating cyber spaceage processing creates classy, edgy atmospheres, a couple of noisy scares and several moments of staggering beauty. Vocals including the great rap subversive Mike Ladd and hugely underrated French rappers TTC embellish the weirdness. Freak-hop magic is thriving stateside. - Word |
