| While most MCs are battling implied foes, vague socio-economic determinants and homoeroticism, Busdriver battles an industry that totally ignores him. This guy is the independent music everyman, charting hip-hop territory that is increasingly similar to the plight of angry indie outsiders a decade or two ago. The political-commercial similarities between what Busdriver is doing and what immediately concerned post-punk rhetoric unfortunately function as raw material for labeling this guy "emo," which is hardly appropriate. What this powerful MC does is use his voice like the instrument that could only be imagined in cultural studies essays on hip-hop. Listen to the way he mixes cadence, tone and point-of-view so deftly while juggling incomparable metaphor. Repeated listening is what this guy is about, which is rewarding and speaks to a substained quality in the music, but also draws attention to how overwhelmingly fast this guy raps and how difficult it is to take it all in. - Metro.Pop |
