| Wielding a hacksaw, a scalpel, chomping on a sarnie and going about his task with grim purpose, Daedelus is performing an autopsy on hip-hop's greying cadaver. Or is he re-animating the beast? Tears are clearly mingling with the embrocation. Exquiste Corpse is so perfectly balanced between mournful surgery on hip-hop's dead ends and positive rekindling of rap's creative synapses, you emerge from the gorgeous swell of tracks like "Impending Doom" and "Dearly Departed" wondering whether hip-hop's been given a new lease of life or been read the last rites. Highlights are the Can-lke rattle and thrum of "Just Briefly," Mike Ladd's and Prefuse 73's takes on "Welcome Home" and the ever-welcome TTC fucking up the fader "Cadavre Exquis" something wicked. This way comes intrigue explored forensically. Masks and gown people, we're going in. - DJ |
