| Daedelus has been hinting at a breakthrough for some time now. This eclectic batch of songs, mixing instrumental tracks with contributions from the likes of Mike Ladd and MF Doom, delivers in a big way. His sonic collages are breathtaking, a diffuse mix of hip-hop beats and lush electro pop that leave you constantly wondering what's coming next. He's a madman on the cut, switching quickly from melodic strings to strangled beats and ethereal vocal harmonies. Most impressively, he blends all these disparate pieces together so naturally. On "Impending Doom," Daedelus weds a slow, soarring string sample with percolating percussion, while MF Doom launches rapidly into a half coherent ramble. The three elements of the song don't even sound like they're supposed to go together but Daedelus combines them masterfully. It's a balancing act he keeps alive from beginning to end here, serving up fourteen dense tracks of beautiful dissonance. - Mean Street |
