| For all Daedelus' avant-electronica and intelligent dance music pretensions (his LP's title references a Surrealist game), there's no doubt that the US producer is an alchemist capable of forging beautiful moods from disjointed, jarring soundscapes. Daedelus is obviously respected - there are guest appearances from alt-rap's finest, including Mike Ladd, Prefuse 73, and masked rap anti-hero MF Doom, whose streams consciousness over Vaudeville ("Impending Doom") are inspired. Elsewhere, flatulent percussion dovetails with the soundtrack of children skipping down a cobbled street and there's an unlikely alliance between evocative 1930's music hall and what seems like a factory grinding to a halt. A pattern is emerging.; take two extreme, mismatched sounds into the studio, then confuse, challenge and win over skeptical ears. - Metro |
