MH-232 Daedelus - Exquisite Corpse  The new release from Daedelus, Exquisite Corpse is an ode to, and a lament for hip-hop culture. Featuring solo contributions and collaborative efforts with guests whose performances range from traditional (MF Doom, Sci from Scienz of Life) to poetic (Mike Ladd, Cyne, Laura Darling) to experimental (Prefuse 73, Hrishikesh Hirway of the One AM Radio, TTC, Jogger), Daedelus forms the seemingly disparate elements of sound found on the album with a single-minded vision. The album's title has a triple meaning: a reference to death, a grand body of work, and the Impressionist group drawing game of the same name. The guest MCs and vocalists contrast their own styles with Daedelus' sugar-laden undercoating proving that there are no limits to what can be included on a hip-hop album. |

| Named after a tragic Greek mythological figure, dressed an Edwardian dandy, and a concept album based on a surrealist parlour game. Pretentious, moi? Well possibly, but if your Las Daedelus, cut-up addict and possessor of a bulging address book full of underground hip-hop's cognoscenti, who cares? While previous Daedelus productions has a tendency to come unstuck like Icarus, Exquiste Corpse is a much stronger proposition, a fusion of musique concrete, toy percussion, acoustic source recordings rewired from the 40s - accordions, cheesy strings and jittery electronic beats, all with a guestlist to die for. MF Doom appears on what sounds like a drummer being pushed down a flight of stairs, and Mike Ladd adds typical sonic awareness to "Welcome Home." Up there with Prefuse 73 and Boom Bip, this Daedelus constructs a musical labyrinth you won't mind getting lost in. - Rock Sound |
