| cLOUDDEAD are some guys from the Anticon Camp. Doseone, why? and odd nosdam are the indie hip-hop saviours from the Bay Area. Pretty non-existent is a clear definition of indie, and so the question then becomes what is indie hip-hop all about? In this case it isn't about avoiding progression or fear of genre-unlike influences. These guys also listen to indie stuff like Hood or Flying Saucer Attack or electronic music by Boards of Canada, etc. This record is quite outstanding as you hear lo-fi drones and strange samples, and it only gets the hip-hop label as there are emcees involved. They got compared to Radiohead's 'Kid A' and that's OK if you want to draw a comparison how different this release is to the expectations you might have held. The mood is depressive and down. This doesn't mean that there isn't humour in this compilation of out of print vinyl. This is music I can relate to as this version of hip-hop avoids all the clichés. These guys rhyme about fears and failure, not jeeps and gold chains. - Substance |
