| Every now and then, an album comes along that is smarter than any listener, not in an egotistical way, but simply in a way that requires listen upon listen upon listen to even hope for absorption. The first full-length from IDM alternative hip-hop goth whatever collective cLOUDDEAD is just such a release. This is beyond your Talib Kweli album, even beyond your El-P collection. Defying even genre labels, this collection of six pairs of two-track releases holds together in a mind-bending head trip sort of way that leaves you questioning everything. There's really no way to even attempt to describe it, and words fail while trying to. With ambient soundscapes that would make Brian Eno cry, and lyrics like "Don't loose your shoes over such a simple step as hitting the ground," cLOUDDEAD takes the very notion of music and warps it around itself, concocting something that's here to teach us all a lesson in art, magnificence and beauty. In the words of cLOUDDEAD themselves, "It's all the same shit but they call it cLOUDDEAD." I don't think so. This, by far, is not "the same shit." Nothing has ever been heard like this before or since. Take a listen. Expand yourself. - Jive |
