| In the last issue, our very own Neil Kulkarni talking about Spooks, wondered aloud about the validity of "alternative" rap. Well, what the hell does that make this odd rooster? Comprising the wonderfully named trio of Doseone, why?, and odd nosdam, cLOUDDEAD mix the spaced out atmospherics of Labradford and Slint with beats the size of a house and distinctly off key vocals. "apt. A" sounds like the Beta Band on Mogadon while "and all you can do is laugh" is Anti-Pop Consortium fronted by Harmony Korine. Slow drones, distorted voices, samples from old acid-rock albums, and plenty of attitude - whatever's going on in there, it's certainly beautiful and strange. So does that make cLOUDDEAD the first post-rock hip-hop act? And who the hell will dig this? And does it matter? You decide. - Rocksound |
