| cLOUDDEAD are a Californian three-piece whose schtick is their steadfastly unfunky musical backings and surreal subject matter, coupled with pseudy pseudonyms Doseone, why? and odd nosdom. The opener "apt. A" has an almost familiar, Daisy Age looseness, with cartoon samples and a narrative about missing out on college education, but even here there's something otherworldly about Doseone's languid, extemporised vocal delivery. Things get weirder on "I promise never to get paint on my glasses again," which recycles, gulp, the Moody Blues. That they're named after the punch line to a five-year-old's mistold knock-knock joke is perhaps the least befuddling thing about this wry ensemble ‚ and theirs is a never less than intriguing debut. - Q |
