| In 1917, French artist Marcel Duchamp signed a porcelain urinal bought from a New York plumbing supplier and entered the object into an art exhibition, asserting that it was not the creation that was important, but the idea ad selection. cLOUDDEAD - Doseone, why? and odd nosdam of absurdist hip-hop collective Anticon - invoke the spirit of Duchamp with raps such as "I urinate in a cup for the art of it / And you'll dissect all of it" and "I've classified water damage as art" implying that in hip-hop everything is (there to be) stolen and reassembled. cLOUDDEAD (who cite Pram, Hood, Radiohead, and most notably Third Eye Foundation as influences) coerce half thoughts and dysfunctional beats into hip-hop that revels the group's own claustrophobia and abstraction. - Alternative Press |
